Zurich's MMRM designation
Setting a new professional standard:
Zurich’s MMRMSM Middle Market Risk Manager Designation
Zurich’s commitment to the growing middle market sector has been evident within the industry for some time, and especially since we launched a focused Middle Market business unit in the spring of 2020. We have made major investments in supporting mid-sized customers and we are always pursuing new opportunities within this dynamic arena. Our pioneering MMRMSM Middle Market Risk Manager Designation is a perfect example of that.
The first and only credential of its kind, the MMRM designation can be earned through nine CE (Continuing Education) courses offered in conjunction with the Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science at St. John’s University. The MMRM courses are available to groups of 10 or more and are part of our expanding selection of Zurich Insurance Academy CE classes. Insurance and financial services professionals serving middle market businesses — including brokers, attorneys, accountants, financial planners, and other advisors — may be eligible for this valuable designation.
Bart Shachnow, Sales Performance Director for Zurich North America and Head of Zurich Academy, explained, “MMRM training is geared toward addressing real-world, practical situations. This training program is highly integrative and interactive, and it develops multiple analytical, technical and relationship-building skills that can be applied to the analysis and resolution of highly complex middle market business issues.”
Participants learn via many tools, including case study analysis and role-playing that includes an in-class competition to win a fictional company’s risk management and insurance account. Those earning the designation can receive up to 26 CE credits, as well as a digital badge that explains the designation and training which can be posted on their LinkedIn pages or other professional platforms.
The courses cover a wide range of topics, including middle market organizational structures, financial statement analysis, current and emerging loss exposures, enterprise and international risk management, executive compensation and employee benefits, underwriting practices and malpractice concerns. The training can be customized to fit the needs of different groups, based on the profile of their clients, target markets, industries they serve, their sales strategies, products and services marketed, and other factors unique to their organizations.
“Working with St. John’s is critical,” Shachnow continued. “They help ensure that the course content developed is objective and neutral, accurate, relevant, timely, and meets the academic standards worthy of a professional designation.”
The affiliation with St. John’s also reflects strong, long-term relationships Zurich has with the New York university. Zurich North America CEO Kristof Terryn is on the Board of Overseers for the Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science; while several Zurich leaders are SJU graduates, including John Mizzi, Head of Industry Practices, U.S. Middle Market; Brian Winters, Head of Large Casualty; and Gerald Chiddick, Regional Executive for the Midwest Region.
Mizzi, Shachnow and Dane Brockett (Head of Zurich North America’s School of Underwriting) are all on a joint advisory board along with Mark J. Browne, Chair of the Faculty of St. John’s School of Risk Management. Instructors for the courses are some of the top thought-leadership specialists and subject matter experts from Zurich and St. John’s.
The MMRM course is groundbreaking, but Zurich’s work in addressing the challenges facing the middle market doesn’t end there. This fast-moving sector demands organizations evolve to keep up with developments and share an expanding knowledge base. And Zurich is ready to lead the way.
“Getting awarded the designation is only the first step,” Shachnow said. “We will provide additional support going forward, including CE-accredited programs focused on issues and strategies relevant for middle market clients. We’ll also be offering periodic MMRM conferences, small group coaching on working with middle market companies, networking opportunities and more.”
